7 Technical Questions
7.1 Does steel cable conduct electricity?
Yes, steel cable is conductive. Both galvanized steel cable and stainless steel are conductive.

7.2 What is the tensile strength of steel cable?
1 mm steel cable already has a breaking strength of around 100 kg. For all other sizes, please check our overview page with tensile and breaking strengths:

7.3 How can I connect steel cables together?
The strongest way to connect two steel cables is to create a loop on each side and link them together. A more compact solution is to use a steel cable connector.
7.4 How do I calculate the working load?
Calculation of Working Load for Steel Cable
The working load of a steel cable, also known as Working Load (WL), is calculated based on the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) of the cable. The formula is as follows:
Working Load (SWL) = Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) / Safety Factor
Explanation:
- Minimum Breaking Load (MBL): The force at which the cable would break under maximum load. This value is usually provided by the manufacturer and depends on the type, diameter, and construction of the steel cable.
- Safety Factor: A factor used to ensure a safe working load. For general applications, a factor of 5 is often used, but this can vary between 3 and 7 depending on the circumstances and regulations.
Example Calculation:
Suppose you have a steel cable with a minimum breaking load of 10,000 kg and use a safety factor of 5:
SWL = 10,000 kg / 5 = 2,000 kg
The safe working load of the cable is therefore 2,000 kg.
Important Points to Consider:
- Type of Cable: Different constructions and materials can have different MBL values.
- Condition of the Cable: Damaged or worn cables have a lower working load than new cables.
- Application: For lifting or hoisting, the safety factors are generally higher than for other applications.
It is always important to consult the manufacturer’s specifications and use the correct safety factor for your specific situation.
7.5 What is KN?
KN stands for KiloNewton. 1 KN = 102 kg.
7.6 How can I cut a PVC-coated steel cable?
The best way to cut PVC-coated steel cable is with a wire cutter.
With this, you can cut several wires at once. The jaws are round, so the cable is not flattened.
7.7 What does MBL mean?
MBL stands for Minimum Breaking Load. This term indicates the minimum breaking load and is often seen in the shop. It serves as a guideline but should not be followed blindly, as every construction is different.
7.8 What does SWL mean?
SWL stands for Safe Working Load. There is a large safety margin maintained between Safe Working Load and Minimum Breaking Load. SWL is the indication for a safe load of the steel cable. If a compression clamp
